Blog 5 – Noah
Hi everyone!
Noah Chapman here, I’m the Technical Lead for The Hierophant.
So, what is a Tech Lead?
Well, I supervise the technical framework of our game, from working in the Unity engine to keeping our Subversion Repository working (more on that later). In addition to my leadership role, I’m also part of the Design Team, and one of our three Creative Directors.
I took on the Tech lead position because I had the most experience working in the Unity game engine. Unity is a free and relatively easy to use game engine and is the system that makes our game work. The biggest challenge the Tech team faced this semester was getting our less experienced team members up to speed in Unity. I’m proud to say that Serena and Brian rose to the challenge! Our job now is to get all the great game assets and artwork you’ve been seeing into the game and make sure that they all work together. We’re confident we can deliver a game that has great art, story, and gameplay, so be sure to keep an eye on our progress!
My other big job as Tech lead is to keep our Subversion Repository (SVN) up and running. An SVN is a little like a Dropbox. We’ve got all of our game assets stored in this repository so that our team can access them anytime, anywhere. However, sometimes it breaks. When it does, I perform some tech-wizardry magic and get it working again. In addition to my Tech team jobs, I also help the design team. Serena, the design lead, and I have spent a lot of time discussing game mechanics (be sure to read Serena’s blog post to hear more on this!). Finally, as a creative director, I give input and sign off on all of the game assets and artwork going into the game.
So, there you have it! My job is to keep our tech running at 100%. It’s been a challenge but has also been very rewarding. We’ve got a talented team here at Small Fry Media, so keep an eye on this space for what’s coming up!
