Hi there!

I’m Rachel and I’m the Narrative Lead and a Creative Director for The Hierophant. Thank you so much for taking an interest in our game and reading our posts!

When I pitched the original idea for the game, I knew I wanted to involve Tarot. I have a lot of respect for Tarot and have dabbled in it myself but I still have a lot to learn. I wanted to convey how much Tarot can show the true feelings of a person and get them to think about things from a different perspective. I had an idea for a detective game and thought about how to combine the two.

I pitched the idea of a murder mystery game that involves a Tarot reader’s help in solving the case, where the Tarot readings would have an important role. I was very happy when my teammates liked the idea and I’m very happy to be working on this with them. This project has allowed me to learn more about Tarot and about how to structure a narrative. This is the first time I have written such a big story and a script, so I was nervous, however, my wonderful team has been a big help to me and I am happy to have them.

Writing the script has been a lot of work, but it is work that I thoroughly enjoy. Creating these characters and the world they live in has been a wonderful experience. Giving each character a personality and envisioning how they would act in their world has really made this project a great experience. Diane and Brian are very talented writers and have brought so many amazing ideas to the project. The hardest part of the project is cutting ideas and parts of the script due to scope. Our professor told us the phrase “kill your darlings”, which has, unfortunately, become common for our ideas, but we have figured out ways to work them out as a team.

Being the Narrative Team Lead has taught me the importance of communication with my team, creating and listening to ideas and considering scope. I hope to become a better leader through this project and hope I can provide great leadership for my team. I’m very passionate about this project and I’m so happy that I am working with such lovely and talented people. Our Narrative, Art, Tech, Design, Marketing and Audio teams, along with our project manager, are working very hard so please support them!
